Sharjah: Would you stay in this 300-year-old village turned luxury mountain resort?
Khor Fakkan retreat blends Emirati heritage with modern comfort and stunning views

SHARJAH: Visitors and residents in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can now step back in time with a stay at Najd Al Meqsar, a newly inaugurated resort in Khor Fakkan built within a historic village that dates back nearly 300 years.
Nestled in the mountains, the resort features seven restored ‘Kareen Houses,’ offering guests an authentic Emirati experience with breathtaking sea views. Unlike modern luxury resorts, Najd Al Meqsar embraces simplicity, honouring the region’s rich history through traditional architecture and a serene mountain setting.
Perched at an altitude of 220 metres, the stone and clay-built houses are arranged in a cascading manner, ensuring uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. The absence of elevators, swimming pools, or lavish amenities enhances the authenticity of this retreat. Each house features a private terrace overlooking the sea, where guests can enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this remote mountain hideaway.
Najd Al Meqsar
Najd Al Meqsar is situated at the head of Wadi Shie, a historically significant site where ancient rock carvings, possibly dating back to the Iron Age, have been discovered. This area was once home to a tribe that settled near the wadi, relying on its water source for survival. However, due to seasonal floods, the tribe eventually built homes higher in the mountains, surrounding the Al Meqsar Fortress.
The fortress, established nearly 300 years ago, played a vital role in defending Khor Fakkan from potential invasions via the Indian Ocean. Alongside Al Rabi and Al Adwani Towers, it formed a crucial defensive network against intruders. Today, hotel guests can hike up the ancient trail leading to these historical landmarks, immersing themselves in the region’s past.

A unique heritage stay
Each of the seven ‘Kareen Houses’ has been meticulously restored to preserve its original architectural elements, including hand-hewn wooden beams, stone walls, and traditional palm-frond roofing.

The interiors have been subtly modernised, offering contemporary comforts such as WiFi, air conditioning, and smart TVs, seamlessly blending tradition with modern convenience.
Dining is provided at Wishi Restaurant, located at the base of the mountain, where guests can enjoy traditional and international cuisine while taking in panoramic views of the landscape. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, creating a dining experience that complements the cultural richness of the stay.
Restoration and development
The transformation of Najd Al Meqsar into a heritage hotel is part of a larger initiative led by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. In 2019, he directed the restoration of several historical sites in Khor Fakkan, including the Khor Fakkan Fort, Al Adwani Tower, and Al Meqsar Fortress. Specialised teams and archaeologists collaborated on the project, ensuring the authenticity of each restored structure.
The hotel is a joint venture between the Authority for Initiatives Implementation (Mubadara) and Shurooq, with an aim to promote heritage tourism in Sharjah. Since its inauguration less than a year ago, the resort has gained popularity among visitors looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience in the UAE.
A staycation like no other
While the resort itself offers a peaceful retreat, the surrounding region provides ample opportunities for exploration. Guests can trek to Al Rafisah Dam, a scenic spot with lush greenery and a tranquil lake. For those seeking a mix of adventure and culture, the town of Khor Fakkan offers pristine beaches and historical sites, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
Room rates at Najd Al Meqsar start from Dh720 for a bed-and-breakfast stay for two adults. Guests can upgrade to half-board for Dh1,010 or opt for a full-board experience at Dh1,300.
